Learn about English: Accent & Dialect

You say tomay-to, I say tomar-to?

There?s always a tell-tale sign that reveals a little bit more about you to others. Quite often, it?s not what you wear or where you holiday, but the manner and pronunciation of your speech. It?s fascinating to consider accent and dialect when thinking about linguistics, and indeed, even general social interaction.

Accent is the part of a language dialect that relates principally to pronunciation, instead of grammar or vocabulary. Just like you?ll find out in Spanish lessons London about the various regional and national accents evident in the Spanish language, there are also multiple distinct accents in English.

Apart from the differences between American and British English, there are a myriad of regional accents. Take the United Kingdom and Ireland, for example, and if you?ve studied English courses Dublin or English courses Birmingham you?ll know all about the possibilities of different pronunciation! Even throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland there is a huge range of accents, and this is not to mention the difference between these and the English spoken in the United States, Canada, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

Forget about BBC English and take a look at some of these accent groups within England! The counties of Cornwell and Devon are included in the West Country geographical accent grouping, there?s the North-East English accent as found around Newcastle and County Durham, the North-West accent, Yorkshire, West Midlands (Birmingham), East Midlands (Nottingham) and East Anglia.

It?s a whole other case when you move further north into Scotland, as an English course Edinburgh would clearly demonstrate. Scottish English has a range of phonology distinct from many other types of spoken English, whilst amongst the Irish you?ll end up with a particular accent from English lessons Dublin, one that?s notably different from other areas of the Emerald Isle.
